A giant banner at Valencia Airport welcomes the World Capital of Design

World Design Capital Valencia 2022 in collaboration with Aena has deployed a giant banner at Valencia Airport to welcome as World Design Capital 2022 from one of the most important airport infrastructures in Spain, connected with 26 countries during the summer season.

The Valencian artist and illustrator Lawerta has been responsible for designing the work – 5 by 9 meters high – which since Monday, May 16, presides over the exit of the terminal to welcome the global epicenter of design throughout this year.

With the message “Welcome to World Design Capital Valencia 2022”, Lawerta has represented the moment when, loaded with their suitcases and guides about the city, tourists from inside and outside Spain arrive at the airport of Valencia.

“I have tried to reflect that moment in which, with the excitement to begin to know and discover the city, the tourist is already previewing everything he/she is going to find in Valencia: sun, beach, mobility, landscapes, history and -above all- design”, explains the author. “He/she is the protagonist and we see everything through his/her figure: his/her face from the plane observing the whole city. His/ her face of fascination at the sight of the old town, smiling at the photo he/she is taking…”

This initiative has been carried out with the collaboration of Aena and takes place in the midst of passenger traffic recovery after the pandemic. Valencia Airport closed 2019 with more than 8.5 million passengers, the highest figure in its history.
