The PID closes its first programme for specialist designers in innovation

The first edition of the Programme for Innovation through Design (PID) held its closing ceremony on Friday 16 July in the Veles e Vents building. The initiative has brought together 8 professional designers and engineers (7 women and one man) and 8 major companies to develop 8 disruptive projects in their fields.

This pioneering initiative, aimed at companies that decide to introduce design as a strategic element in their innovation processes, is promoted by World Design Capital Valencia 2022, and is managed and organised by Innova&acción.

At the closing ceremony, the talents selected to participate in the programme presented their projects, developed during recent months with a view to solving specific challenges, to the participating companies – Logopost, Teika, Point 1920, Grupo Gimeno, Grupo Ribera, KOO International, Norauto and Simetría Grupo.

The director of Innova&acción and of the PID, Olga Broto, stated thatthe convulsive social and economic context that we are experiencing is forcing organisations to consider an urgent change of mindset. The companies and professionals that have participated in the first edition of the PID act as ambassadors of this message, placing the emphasis on the need to review the way they face challenges in the field of business and to do so based on design.”

Xavi Calvo, director general of World Design Capital Valencia 2022, said that “speaking about strategic design in companies not only means speaking of social change and transformative innovation, but also increased efficiency, profitability and the creation of successful new business models.”

“According to data from 2018 of the Association of Designers of the Valencian Community, design contributes 2.1% of the turnover of the Valencian economy. All those involved with the PID, and with the extensive programme of World Design Capital Valencia 2022, are giving visibility to the important role played by design as a generator of social and economic value and we are going to give this figure increasing relevance,” explained Xavi Calvo.

Juan Pastor, assistant director of Innova&acción and academic director of the PID, affirmed that “Valencia has sown a seed to change the productive process of the country. The implication of the companies with the designers and the results is amazing. Our aim is to integrate forthcoming generations of designers so that they not only produce but have a strategic business outlook and a voice and act as a spearhead for other companies.”

Organisations, especially in volatile environments such as that which we are currently experiencing, must back innovation in order to provide differential value in the market through products, services and experiences adapted to the new contexts.

The PID, which ran from April to June with a teaching staff of nationally and internationally recognised prestige, has trained participating talent in such diverse areas as: strategy, communication and innovation, profitability, creativity, team management, process improvement, design management, circular economy, digital transformation, trends and indicators, all of which are essential to connect design and innovation.

The eight talents who have brought the first edition of the PID to life have very diverse track records and they will serve as an inspiration to professional designers of the future who wish to become specialists in innovation. They are: María del Pilar Peiró, Gemma Paredes, Sebastián López, Cristina Lagarde, Lorena Miravalles, Fabiola S. Egea, Cayetana Esteve and Irene Carrasco.

The Programme for Innovation through Design is sponsored by DS Smith Tecnicarton and Monobo.

Eliminating the barriers that have traditionally separated design and business, the first edition of the PID has fulfilled the wishes of the strong Valencian design sector: for the design discipline to become consolidated as a key tool in the business strategy of companies.
