CONGRESS. “World Design Policy Conference”

The World Conference on Design Policies provides a global platform for the exchange of ideas and a laboratory for experimentation “think tank” where best practices are presented from different countries, regions and cities that work from the inclusion of effective design policies.

The result of these meetings and their conclusions seeks to lay the foundations for exercising public policies where design plays a relevant role, understanding design from the perspective of rigor and good judgment in its application. 

A physical meeting in Valencia that focuses its activity on the debate and exchange of ideas from the international level, with the city of Valencia in the center of attention and as a pole of attraction for foreign investments seeking opportunities thanks to development and stability.

CONFIRMED SPEAKERS WORLD DESIGN POLICY CONFERENCE

Ezio Manzini. For over three decades he has been working in the field of design for sustainability. Most recently, his interests have focused on social innovation, considered as a major driver of sustainable changes. In this perspective he started DESIS: an international network of schools of design, active in the field of design for social innovation and sustainability.

Presently, he is President of DESIS Network and Honorary Professor at the Politecnico di Milano. He has been guest professor in several design schools world-wide, as (in the past decade): Elisava-Design School and Engineering (Barcelona), Tongji University (Shanghai), Jiangnan University (Wuxi), University of the Arts (London), CPUT (Cape town), Parsons -The new School for Design (NYC)

Brandon Gien is the CEO of Good Design Australia, Chair of the Australian Good Design Awards, and Deputy Chair of the Australian Design Council. He has spent the past 25 years passionately advocating for the value of good design to improve our social, economic, cultural and environmental quality of life. During his term, he led the strategic transformation of the organisation, resulting in a new name, vision and mission aligned to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.  He helped spearhead the establishment of the World Design Impact Prize and World Design Medal and Chaired the Selection Committee for the 2022 World Design Capital®, awarded to the City of Valencia, Spain.

Sustainability provocateur and cultural protagonist Dr. Leyla Acaroglu challenges people to think differently about how the world works. As an award winning designer, UNEP Champion of the Earth, sociologist, and entrepreneur, she developed the Disruptive Design Method and designs cerebrally activating experiences, gamified toolkits, and unique educational experiences that help people make the status quo obsolete. Her mainstage TED talk on sustainability has been viewed over a million times, and she leads presentations around the world on activating positive social change through creative interventions and systems thinking. Leyla is the founder of Disrupt Design, the UnSchool and the CO Project Farm.

Alok Nandi.  Storyteller in multiple media, space and technologies, from high-tech interactive installations to low-tech mise-en-scène. Alok Nandi is a lecturer and invited professor as well as regular speaker at international conferences and events (incl. PechaKucha Tokyo, TEDx Flanders). In parallel, he launched PechaKucha Brussels and IxDA group in Brussels (Interaction Design Association). Alok Nandi chaired Interaction14 in Amsterdam [1000+ attendees] and served on the IxDA Board of Directors, a.o. as President (Feb.2018-Feb.2020), and for the Design Declaration. Alok Nandi is professor of design, creativity & innovation at Institut Paul Bocuse, hospitality-culinary, founded by chef Paul Bocuse, 3* Michelin.

René Spitz.

René is researching the future of design education. He conducted an international study on this topic for the iF Design Foundation, which was published as a white book in 2021. This was followed by an evaluation of design studies from the perspective of public value. The foundation is currently developing the prototype for a design program as part of a global research project.- René is a professor at the RFH University of Applied Sciences Cologne and a member of the board of the iF Design Foundation. He has published numerous books and articles on the social responsibility of design and the Ulm School of Design (HfG). He has produced more than 400 broadcasts about design for the German radio station WDR. – René has completed his studies in communication sciences, history and German philology with a doctoral thesis on the HfG Ulm. From 1988 to 1991, he worked alongside Otl Aicher for the company durst. From 2004 to 2007, he was chairman of the advisory board of the International Forum for Design (IFG) Ulm.

Dr. Gisele Raulik Murphy has a PhD in public policies for design and innovation (University of Wales) and a Masters in Strategies for Design and Innovation (Brunel University, UK). She is the Co-Founder and Partner at DUCO Design Intelligence based in Brazil. Gisele is passionate about collaborative work that helps groups to co-create innovative solutions, particularly in the context of public policies and cultural change. She is the Founder and Coordinator of the Chevening Innovators in Government Network, and Open Innovation Leader at CELEPAR – Parana State Company for IT and Communication (Brazil). Among her current challenges within government, she is responsible for the implementation of agile methodologies and design thinking to create the means to innovate and digitalize public services.

Päivi Tahkokallio is Founder and CEO of Tahkokallio Design+, a strategic design agency from Lapland, Finland. With her track record on strategic and inclusive design she has often been called the mother of Arctic Design, a design approach to support sustainable development of the Arctic. Päivi was President of BEDA, The Bureau of European Design Associations with 48 designer and design promotion organizations in 26 European countries from 2019 to 2021. As President Päivi led BEDA’s work to develop design policy in Europe. BEDA became the first partner of the New European Bauhaus initiative. Päivi is Advisor to the Board of Ornamo Art and Design Finland, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (FRSA)

Brigitte Borja de Mozota is one of the world’s most prominent scholars in the domain of design management and author of the reference book Design Management – Using Design to Build Brand Value and Corporate Innovation. Currently, a consultant as well as professor and supervisor of MBA “managing by design” theses, she concentrates on mission-driven projects and to develop tools to help understanding the value of the design industry and design-driven innovation, as well as on leadership challenges in economics.

Anna Whicher specializes in developing, implementing and evaluating government policies using design methods. As Head of Policy Design at PDR (International Design and Research Centre) at Cardiff Metropolitan University, she is responsible for developing partnerships, drafting proposals, leading networks, conducting research, developing strategies and evaluating impact for government, enterprise agencies, sector councils and trade associations. Since 2009, she has been managing a portfolio of multi-million pound European, research council and government contracts. Examples include EU projects on innovation policies and programes, consultancy for trade associations and strategy development for regional and national governments. She has worked as a parliamentary assistant, press officer in the French Ministry of European Affairs and has completed her PhD benchmarking design for innovation policy in Europe.

Hanna Harris started as Helsinki’s second Chief Design Officer in 2020. Her task is to lead Helsinki’s pioneering work in using design to build the city’s future. Prior to this, she was Director of Archinfo Finland (2016-2020), the national promotion and collaboration platform for architecture. She was Commissioner of the critically acclaimed 2018 Mind-Building exhibition at the Finnish pavilion at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. Previously she was Programme Director at Helsinki Design Week and at The Finnish Institute in London. She has also worked as an urban researcher at the University of Helsinki and Aalto University and abroad at the universities of Cambridge, Westminster and Milano-Bicocca.
