EXHIBITION. “Pepe Gimeno. Dialogues between art and design”

Fundación Bancaja presents the anthological exhibition Pepe Gimeno. Dialogues between art and design, held within the framework of the World Design Capital Valencia 2022, which can be visited at its headquarters in Valencia from December 16, 2022 to February 19, 2023.

The exhibition, curated by José Miguel Arce, offers a journey through the graphic and plastic production of the Valencian creator over five decades of a professional career recognized by awards such as the National Design Award in 2020. This review of Pepe Gimeno’s work is approached for the first time from the perspective of the direct relationship between his work as a graphic designer and as a visual artist.

Comprising more than a hundred pieces dating from 1972 to 2022, the exhibition brings together numerous drawings, paintings, sculptures, mixed media works and video art created by Gimeno in his free practice of the visual arts, which establish a visual and conceptual dialogue with his graphic designs commissioned by competitions and captured in brands, posters, covers, panels, packaging and various publications. This double narrative presented by the exhibition is accompanied by a sound narration that guides visitors on their journey, bringing them closer to the works of Pepe Gimeno and revealing the relationship between his graphic and artistic work as communicating vessels of the same reality.

Pepe Gimeno (València, 1951) is a designer, typographer and visual artist. He graduated from the School of Arts and Crafts of Valencia in 1970. His work has been featured in numerous international publications and has taken part in exhibitions in Europe, Japan, the United States, China and South America. He has received the TDC Communication Design Award six times from the Type Directors Club of New York, as well as two certificates from the ISTD of the United Kingdom, the Golden and Platinum Award from Graphis Poster, a Líder Pack Award in 2006 for Sivaris packaging and the National Design Award in 2020.
