EXHIBITION. “Anni and Josef Albers: Art and life”
Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM)
The exhibition presents the work of two great artists, Anni and Josef Albers, whose artistic production made them pioneers of modernity in the 20th century. Although they developed their work independently, the intimacy and complicity of their relationship enabled them, throughout their careers, to support and strengthen each other mutually while enriching each other’s work through a permanent dialogue founded on respect.
Anni and Josef Albers met at the Bauhaus in 1922 and married three years later. Throughout their lives and artistic careers, they shared the belief that art should be at the centre of human existence since art – according to Anni and Josef Albers – can profoundly transform the world.
The show covers their whole artistic career, both individual and joint, and this will be the first time that the work of the artists as a couple, throughout their different creative stages, is presented in Spain. The exhibition will be organised chronologically and will include approximately 350 works including paintings, photographs, textile designs, films, documentary material and selected pieces of furniture from their Bauhaus stage to represent the fundamental milestones of the career of this pair of artists.
