EXHIBITION. “Graphic Route. Designing the sound of Valencia”
Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM)
Graphic Route. Designing the sound of Valencia, is an exhibition that seeks to x-ray one of the aspects least known to the general public with regard to the clubbing scene generated in the city in the eighties and nineties: posters and graphic design.
The aim is to offer a unifying narrative on the evolution of graphic design around what is popularly known as the “Ruta del bakalao”, with a journey that starts with the Valencian tradition of comics and illustration, connects with the arrival of musical and aesthetic modernity in Spain in the nineteen-eighties, and ends with the digital techniques that defined this last stage of the phenomenon. The purpose of the itinerary will become clear via numerous personal interviews with different agents involved in the design process (designers/artists, printers and cultural managers), as well as the paradigmatic posters and merchandising of the era.
In short, Graphic Route aims to offer a coherent discourse about the commencement, development and structure of very particular aesthetics and shared imagery which were born in Valencia, while vindicating their considerable artistic and cultural value.
A production by the Institut Valencià d’art modern (IVAM) in the setting of WDC2022Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM)
