Gold in the Graphis awards with the poster of Valencia World Design Capital 2022

The poster presented by Valencia to the World Design Organization to become World Design Capital in 2022, has just received a Gold in the selection performed each year by Graphis, one of the world’s most prestigious publishers and with the longest track record. Its selection “Posters Annual 2021” features a total of eight Valencian works, foremost among which, with the maximum distinction, is the poster designed by Ibán Ramón, which represents a typographic game with the visual image of the bid, defining a modular system that uses the initials of the name and allows a multitude of adaptations.

Together with this Gold, the second adaptation of the poster, in grey instead of yellow, has also achieved an honourable mention and has been selected for the annual. And they are not the only Valencians. A total of eight posters from the Valencian Community, from a total of 21 in Spain, have been included in this select list which, in a few months, will be published in the Annual of the firm, which is highly valued by all the design sector, including professionals and educational establishments.

The list of international award-winning posters also includes works by Valencian studios such as the Yinsen studio, with another of the Gold awards and a Silver, and the Creatias studio, which has received one of the honourable mentions. Ibán Ramon, as well as the Gold for the poster of Valencia World Design Capital 2022, has received four honourable mentions for another four posters, such as that of the Filmoteca d’Estiu and the saint’s day celebrations of Nazaret.

It is a great honour to be included in the selection and in the annual, not with one poster, but with a total of five, including the two designed for Valencia World Design Capital 2022.

“Graphis is an international bastion of the excellence of design and visual images. When I was young I travelled to London and bought the Graphis annuals; they were harder to find here. These annuals were the world excellence of graphic design. Every year, a select group of designers choose their favourites and it is truly a great honour to be included in the selection and in the annual, not with one poster, but with a total of five, including the two designed for Valencia World Design Capital 2022,” explained the designer.

The Graphis magazine was published for the first time in 1944 in Zurich (Switzerland). In 1952 the first Graphis Annual was presented and, the same year, it was invited to Alliance Graphique International.
In the 1980s, the headquarters of Graphis was moved from Zurich to New York City. The Annuals were redefined and the Graphis of Advertising, Photography, Logos and Typeface, among others, were added to the usual titles of Design and Posters.

Every year an international jury formed by prestigious designers chooses the recipients of the trophies and diplomas, whose work will be published in the Graphis annual of each speciality.

For Xavi Calvo, director of World Design Capital Valencia 2022, “This international recognition just reinforces our conviction that the Valencian Community is a land of great talent in all the fields of design, competing with designers from around the world and finding their way into the most distinguished and important international publications of the sector. Congratulations to all the award winners and especially to Ibán Ramón, for making us an image that is now an international reference,” he explained.

For Maria Pradera and Lorena Sayavera, designers and directors of Yinsen, “We are especially pleased that the Gold is for the posters of the Teatre Rialto of Valencia, a work that we have undertaken with great affection and from which, furthermore, they have chosen one of the pieces for the cover of the book. Also the Silver, for one of the latest campaigns we have completed for the European Design Awards 2020,” they declared.
