Projects that will form part of the legacy

One of the aims of World Design Capital Valencia 2022 has been to join forces, our own and those of others. For this reason and as one of the first steps to be taken, in 2020 a call was launched for projects that would not only boost the value of design and creativity, but which were also in line with the Sustainable Development Goals promoted by the United Nations on matters of sustainability and social justice for 2030.

Almost 500 proposals were received, resulting in a wide range of ideas committed to the city, to design, to heritage, to inclusion… A huge variety of topics with a common thread that have been produced, presented and brought to residents throughout the year and some of which have been selected to last into 2023 and beyond.

DNA Ceramics

Mapping and locating professional craftsmen and women who, with their work, contribute to increasing the value of design through pottery throughout the Valencian region. This is one of the main aims of “DNA Ceramics. Designing the Mediterranean”. This initiative aims to strengthen the reputation and prestige of Mediterranean design through one of its great historical legacies: ceramics. This knowledge has been held in our region for centuries and, even today, is rooted in craftsmanship, generating a differential value that is identified all along the Mediterranean coast thanks to the significance of its design.

Design Map

The Design Map arises in the light of the need to give voice to projects committed to design, investments by entrepreneurs who have used professional designers in the launch of their projects and institutions who contract and programme design.

The aim of this website is to compile individual cases of premises that have used design and which manage to illustrate the difference of a city such as Valencia and which have contributed notably to its declaration as World Design Capital in 2022.

Programme for Innovation through Design (PID)

Design is an increasingly necessary element in organizations, which is not limited to a specific area or to a single process. It can and should be incorporated throughout the company, and especially in any type of innovation since, furthermore, professionals of this discipline have the ability to connect creativity and innovation in their daily work.

In the light of this challenge, it is time to show that design offers methodologies and ways of working that can prove very useful for organizations: therefore, World Design Capital Valencia 2022 presented together with innova&acción the “Programme for innovation through design” (PID)a programme implemented in cooperation with Valencia City Council and IVACE.

Educational workshops and packs

One of the aims of World Design Capital Valencia 2022 has been to bring design to people by offering participative proposals in the form of educational workshops. The projects offered to the public during 2022 were the Ping-Pong Horta, Valencian tile and Nolla ceramic workshops.

The aim of the “Ping-pong horta” workshops is to rediscover the Valencian market garden area. These workshops are visual and fun and can be attended by groups or individuals. The idea is for participants to build a special and unique table tennis racket printed with fragments of the Valencian market garden by sticking on vinyl cut-outs to design and compose their own patch of garden.

“An approach to Nolla Mosaic” is a family workshop for small groups to learn in a practical way about the design and application of one of the most internationally extended Valencian craft legacies, the Nolla mosaic. Using coloured pieces, the participants recreate motifs from the catalogues or invent their own compositions. This experience allows attendees to become familiar with this highly valued Valencian heritage.

In “Approaching Valencian tiles” the attendees experiment with the process for design and creation of typical hand-painted Valencian tiles, with the designs so characteristic of twentieth century ceramics in Valencia. These designs were mainly used to adorn the façades of many modernist houses of the era. At the end of the workshop, the participants obtain their own design: a tile that will form part of their home and their historical, artistic and cultural heritage.

FOC

The main aim of FOC (which means FIRE in the Valencian language) is to position the Valencian region as the “World Capital of Fire Festivities”, helping not only to present the rich heritage found in our region, but also to encourage synergies and cultural exchanges with other fire festivities.

As in 2022, throughout 2023 various activities are scheduled with an extensive agenda of exhibitions, conferences, round tables and projections with the common theme of the Fallas.
