Valencia celebrates the new use of the Miramar Tower by residents

The city of Valencia has hosted the meeting “Miramar Urban Meet”, an event that celebrates the remodelling of the Miramar Tower for new uses by citizens. The event – promoted by different urban groups in cooperation with World Design Capital Valencia 2022 and the City Council of Valencia – was attended by Joan Ribó (mayor of the city), and Xavi Calvo (director of World Design Capital Valencia 2022) as well as various representatives of the council such as Sergi Campillo (deputy mayor and councillor for Urban Ecology), Lucía Beamud (councillor for Equality, Public Space and Villages) and Giuseppe Grezzi (councillor for Mobility).

Throughout the event, activities were held for people of all ages, ranging from skating, longboard, exhibitions by urban artists, parkour, urban dances, callisthenics, break dance and rap, to dance.

The inauguration of the new use for the Miramar Tower represents in itself a cause for celebration by all residents and, therefore, joy for the city as World Design Capital 2022. This reopening of the space shows once again the strong commitment by Valencia City Council to improving people’s quality of life, converting design into a tool for social transformation. The idea is for the residents themselves to decide what to do with disused sites, bringing new life and activity. We can affirm that, from now on, the Miramar Tower will be a new meeting point for urban culture, as well as revitalizing one of the major entry points into the city,” affirmed Xavi Calvo, director of World Design Capital Valencia 2022.

The mayor, Joan Ribó, expressed his satisfaction after visiting the space, where World Design Capital Valencia 2022 has unfurled a gigantic banner with the aim of welcoming locals and visitors to the city that this year holds the title of World Design Capital. The mayor congratulated the city for the fact that Valencia has facilities comparable to other European cities and this space is reused to provide an area for citizens, innovation and urban design. Based on simplicity, we still need to know how to give the Tower more uses that we are going to study,” he pointed out.
